March 11, 2010 · The morning everything changed
It started with one brutal hangover — and a bet with myself.
I was 218 pounds at my heaviest. Puffy-faced, sucking my gut in for photos, waking up foggy. I wasn't an alcoholic — a couple of drinks a night, a few more on weekends. But I felt average in every area of my life. One rough morning in Austin, Texas, I made a simple bet: could I go 30 days alcohol-free?
- Tired, sluggish, unmotivated
- Puffy face, rolls of belly fat
- "Just existing in the world"
- Clear-minded, fit, energized
- Better skin, deep sleep, more money
- Finally really living
I felt so good on day 30 that I said, "I'll just keep going." That was 2010. I went on to anchor SportsCenter on ESPN, interview Brad Pitt and Arnold Schwarzenegger as a Hollywood correspondent, and build a life I love — and I trace all of it back to that first 30 days.
